Yoga Asanas: Yoga Postures | Poses - Step by Step Guidance

Science of Yoga was first expounded by Lord Shiva who taught more than 8,40,000 asanas (postures). The first reference to Yoga appears in the Rig Veda. However it was the great saint Patanjali who first systematised it in his Yoga Sutras. Patanjali spoke of 8 Limbs of Yoga which include ethical disciplines (yama and niyama), physical postures and breathing (asana and pranayama) and meditative withdrawl and concentration (pratyahara, dharana and dhyana). These culminate in samadhi, the state of ultimate bliss. An asana is a pose or posture used in the practice of yoga. The word “asana” means a posture, a steady position of the body. Originally, the asanas served as stable postures for prolonged meditation. More than just stretching, asanas open the energy channels, chakras and psychic centers of the body. Asanas purify and strengthen the body and control and focus the mind.It is estimated that there are thousands of asanas. in the incredibly varied discipline of yoga, with around 100 in active use by yogis all over the world.

Asanas have another responsibility and importance from the point of view of physical health. "The organs of the human body are made up of tissues. This is the reason why the health of human body depends on the health of tissues. According to physiology, there are three conditions of health of the different tissues of the human body. These are:- i) Constant supply of proper nourishment and of the internal secretions of the endocrine glands, ii) Effective removal of waste products; and iii) Healthy functioning of the nerve-connections. Cultural poses are fully capable of fulfilling these conditions." Yoga is not a religion, but is a powerful technique for self-realisation. It teaches us to live in the present, without worry, stress or anger. We make peace with ourselves, and from this inner harmony, comes peace in our relationships. This makes Yoga of immense relevance to our age. It is our hope at the Universal Yoga Centre that by studying this great science, you may find the true meaning of life, and go on to make the world a better place. May you be well and happy ! | |||||||
